Alleged hire-car thief takes off with home safe

A 28-year-old man has been charged following a vehicle theft and an aggravated burglary earlier this month.

Police allege that on On October 1, the man stole a white, Mazda CX-3 hire car from Canberra Airport. At 5 the following morning two people broke into a home in Evatt, threatening a resident before fleeing in the stolen Mazda with a safe.

Police in Queanbeyan found the hire car on October 3 before searching the house on October 9, seizing several items, including a safe matching the description of the one stolen from Evatt.

The man – who was subject to good behaviour obligations – was arrested at the ACT court precinct on Wednesday and charged with two counts of riding/driving a motor vehicle without consent, joint commission aggravated burglary and driving while suspended.
