Police chase ‘furious’ unlicensed driver

A man, on bail for similar offences, has been charged with two counts of furious driving, being an unlicensed driver, using an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, two counts of failing to stop for police, driving a motor vehicle at police and having a driver-prescribed drug in oral fluid.

The charges against the 45-year-old Mawson man follows a pursuit in south Canberra late on Saturday night, which started when police patrolling in Fisher say they spotted the man’s silver Volkswagen Golf speeding on Namatjira Drive and, in Kambah, driving through a red light.

Police say they activated emergency lights and sirens, but the driver accelerated away, speeding through Kambah and Duffy, sometimes on the wrong side of the road, driving on footpaths and through intersections against red lights.

The Golf was found in a front yard in Holder with damage to the front wheels.

Police arrested the driver and a female passenger. The driver underwent a drug-screening test, which resulted in a positive indication to a prescribed drug.
