Drugged, suspended driver flips his car in Bruce

A 23 year-old Taylor man, on a suspended licence, has been charged with negligent driving, drug driving and driving while suspended following a single-vehicle collision on Gungahlin Drive, Bruce, late on Thursday night.

Police allege the driver of the gold-coloured Toyota Landcruiser lost control of the vehicle, flipping it over the barrier on the median strip and coming to a stop in the southbound lanes.

A female passenger was taken to hospital for a medical assessment.

The driver returned a positive result to a roadside alcohol and drug screening test for the presence of multiple drugs including methylamphetamine and cocaine.

He was arrested and charged with negligent driving, drug driving and driving while suspended.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing Insp Mark Steel said: “It is pure luck that no one was killed or seriously injured as a result of this collision yesterday.

“Driving while impaired seriously affects your ability to have proper control over your vehicle and significantly increases the risk of a collision.

“There is zero tolerance for impaired driving on our roads, and we will continue to target drink and drug drivers and remove them for our roads to keep the community safe.”

Police are reminding drivers that double demerits are now in effect for the King’s Birthday long weekend until 11.59pm on Monday.
