Police seize thousands of guns this year, but want more

Some of the thousands of firearms seized by ACT police.

ACT police have seized more than 2500 firearms and firearm-related parts, including homemade firearms, 3D printed weapons and gel blasters so far this year.

Police are urging people to hand in unwanted and unregistered firearms under the permanent National Firearms Amnesty.

A/Supt Matt Sprague said there were no good reasons for homemade, illegal or unregistered firearms to be in the community.

“We have seen serious injuries this year due to firearms being in our community,” he said.

“Unregistered and illegal weapons make it harder for police to investigate serious crimes such as aggravated burglaries, assaults, threats of violence and homicides.”

He said that under the permanent national amnesty, firearms, parts and ammunition could be surrendered to police without facing prosecution.

“By removing these weapons from the community, we can prevent them from being used for criminal activity,” A/Supt Sprague said.
