Drunk driver runs into Gungahlin light pole

A 53-year-old drunk driver – four times over the legal limit – hit a light pole as police pursued his grey Holden Captiva SUV on Horse Park Drive, Throsby, on Friday evening.

Patrolling police spotted the car being driven dangerously. Despite activating their lights and sirens, the Holden driver failed to stop, and kept travelling along Horse Park Drive on to Gecko Way in Thorsby.

Police say that a short time later, the vehicle mounted the kerb and hit a light pole before coming to a stop. Officers arrested the man and he was taken to Gungahlin Police Station where he recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reading of 0.231 – more than four times the legal limit.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days. He will also face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date charged with multiple driving offences.

Police are seeking witnesses or dash-cam footage of the car registered as YNG 20L and also looking for the driver of a black BMW sedan that may have been hit by the Holden on Bettong Avenue near Gecko Way.
