Miss Austen, a four part mini-series on the life of novelist Jane Austen, is a classic case of if you think you’ll like it, you probably will, says streaming columnist NICK OVERALL.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are in line for the Netflix treatment, getting modern versions that are set to hit the platform in the coming years.

That’s on top of a string of Austen-inspired films and TV shows already strewn across the streaming world. Some good. Some not so

It seems audiences can’t get enough of the witty dialogue and period drama that even beyond Austen’s oeuvre has become an incredibly popular TV sub-genre.

So ’tis rather the most fortunate time then is it not for Netflix to drop a new drama series based on Jane herself.

Miss Austen, a four part miniseries is now available to watch and unsurprisingly it has yet again delivered the streaming giant the goods, racking up millions of viewers.

Originally premiering on BBC last year, it stars Keeley Hawes as Austen in a show that spans four decades of her life, depicting her Hampshire heritage all the way through to when she hit her literary stride and her tragically young death at 41 on July 18, 1817. 

This show is a classic case of if you think you’ll like it, you probably will. 

Well produced and well acted, it does politely ask for some solid interest in its subject matter as a prerequisite, but for any major Austen fan it’s not going to take much persuasion to give this one a go. 

NEED something with a few more thrills? This month Apple TV Plus is serving up a new Aussie six-part series Last Seen, set in regional Victoria. 

This one is about the search for a missing girl but comes with an intriguing twist.

Patrick Brammall (who some may have seen in Colin From Accounts) plays Ian Ridley, a detective whose young daughter Maggie disappeared 11 years ago without a trace.

In the intervening decade the loss has shattered his family, but Ian has never stopped believing she is still alive. 

His day-to-day work as a police dispatcher takes a dramatic turn when on one shift he receives a call from a teenage girl who he becomes convinced is Maggie, sending him down an obsessive rabbit hole in a search for answers 

Has the grief finally broken this man or is he, despite all doubts, actually right in thinking he’s found his daughter?

That’s the hook of this six-part series that comes with a uniquely homegrown mystery. 

RETURNING for a blockbuster season two this month is Paramount Plus’ hit crime series MobLand.

Set in London, the story follows the violent rivalry between two dynastic crime families fighting for control of the city’s underworld.

The Harrigans and the Stevensons have been at each other’s throats for decades, but their blood feud hits a whole new level when the grandson of one of the families goes missing, sparking wild accusations ready to erupt at any moment.

Caught in the middle of it all is Harry De Souza, a fixer for the Harrigans tasked with trying to find their prized grandson but his search may just push his loyalty to the limits.

This series has managed to pull an absolutely stellar cast. Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and, of course, Tom Hardy as Da Souza are all in the line-up.

It’s also executively produced by Guy Ritchie, the man behind the slick and stylish action franchise The Gentlemen, made into a movie and series on Netflix. 

Combine his fire-on-all-cylinders approach with a collection of actors as talented as this and the second season of MobLand is set to go off like a powder keg again.
