Canberra’s Rebus Theatre is calling on LGBTQIA+ young people aged 12 to 17 to take part in Acting Out: On Screen, a free filmmaking program designed to foster creativity, confidence and connection during the October school holidays.

Now in its sixth year, the popular Acting Out initiative provides a safe and welcoming environment where participants can develop skills in writing, directing, acting and editing while creating their own short film.

The program encourages young people to explore their unique voices, learn the language of visual storytelling and gain hands-on experience with contemporary filmmaking techniques.

This year’s program will be led by former Canberran Oliver Levi-Malouf, better known to many as drag performer and visual artist Etcetera Etcetera.

A graduate of the Australian Film Television and Radio School, Levi-Malouf has worked across major arts events and commercial campaigns and says returning to Canberra to mentor emerging artists is particularly meaningful.

“As a young person I craved opportunities to extend and challenge myself as an emerging filmmaker and artist, but there were very few available,” he says. “With this program we aim to inspire the next generation of Canberra creatives to take control and feel confident producing authentic work that reflects who they are.”

Levi-Malouf will be joined by additional LGBTQIA+ arts facilitators, while a wellbeing officer from Meridian will provide support throughout the program.

Rebus Theatre, known for bringing professional artists and community members together through performances, workshops and creative programs, is encouraging schools, youth workers, wellbeing teams and community organisations to share information about the opportunity with young people and their families.
