An outspoken Labor backbencher has walked away from a car crash on a motorway avoiding “serious injury”.

Chifley MP Ed Husic was driving home from his western Sydney electorate office on Tuesday when he was involved in a serious motor accident.

Paramedics on the scene reported a truck rear-ended Mr Husic’s car while travelling at about 80km/h on the M7 motorway.

The Labor MP sustained minor abrasions, fractures and a concussion and was taken to the nearby Westmead Hospital to be assessed.

Mr Husic was discharged on Wednesday and is providing a statement to police.

In a post on Instagram, he thanked the medical staff for their “outstanding care” and his family and friends for their support.

Mr Husic said he was “extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury”, and will take a short period of leave from parliamentary duties to fully recover.

“Mr Husic thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedics at Westmead Hospital for providing him with outstanding care and thanked his family and friends for their support, especially during his hospital stay,” the statement said.

Federal parliament is set to resume on Tuesday after a month-long winter break.

The backbencher in July used an appearance at Labor’s national conference to push for stronger criticism of Israel in the party’s platform, but the motion was quashed by factional leaders.

Mr Husic was a minister in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s first term, but was scrapped from the frontbench shortly after the 2025 election in a factional deal.
