Road closures will affect traffic on Commonwealth Avenue this weekend as work continues on light rail Stage 2A.

Construction crews are carrying out watermains, stormwater and utilities work, along with installing canopies at the City South and Commonwealth Park stops as the line is extended from the Civic to Commonwealth Park.

The most significant disruption will occur from 8pm Friday, May 1, to 5am Monday May 4, when Commonwealth Avenue will be fully closed in both directions between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle. The westbound off-ramp from Parkes Way on to Commonwealth Avenue southbound will remain open, with detours in place.

A second closure is scheduled from 8pm Friday, May 15 to 5am Monday, May 18, when northbound lanes will be closed between the Parkes Way on-ramp and Vernon Circle. Southbound traffic from Vernon Circle to Albert Street East will be reduced to one lane.

Intermittent lane changes and reductions will also occur throughout May on northbound sections between the Parkes Way on-ramp and Vernon Circle.

Authorities say the works have been scheduled at night and on weekends where possible to limit disruption, though further closures will be required later in the year.

Major construction on Stage 2A is expected to be completed in early 2027, with testing and commissioning to follow ahead of services beginning in 2028.
