“Uneven” access to sporting facilities across the ACT has prompted the Canberra Liberals to call for an independent audit of public sporting infrastructure.
Shadow minister for sport and recreation James Milligan will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly calling on the Government to commission an independent audit of all sporting facilities in the territory.
Mr Milligan said public information showed access to sporting facilities was uneven, pointing to figures showing Tuggeranong has one playing field for every 1400 residents, Gungahlin one for every 2436 residents, and Molonglo no playing fields for its population of about 18,000.
He said the sporting community had raised concerns about difficulties finding places to play, including in evidence to the Legislative Assembly standing committee on economics, industry and recreation.
Mr Milligan said the government’s reluctance to develop a sporting infrastructure plan showed “a disregard for the community”.
“How can Labor which has been in government for over 24 years, be afraid of a long-term infrastructure plan,” he said.
He said the Liberals were seeking “a transparent report on the condition of public facilities and an idea of what we may need in the future”.
