Summer safety warning for Canberra park visitors

Namadgi National Park… Those undertaking longer or remote walks have been advised to carry a personal locator beacon, available for hire from the Namadgi and Tidbinbilla visitor centres.

Canberrans are being urged to check fire danger ratings, weather conditions and park closures before heading into the ACT’s parks and reserves this summer.

Parks ACT is warning visitors to prepare for extreme heat, bushfire risks, changing weather, difficult terrain, unreliable mobile reception and increased snake activity.

Bushwalkers and cyclists should carry sufficient water, food, sunscreen and offline maps, choose routes suited to their fitness and tell someone when they expect to return.

Those undertaking longer or remote walks are advised to carry a personal locator beacon, available for hire from the Namadgi and Tidbinbilla visitor centres.

High temperatures, strong winds and fire danger can trigger temporary closures of parks, roads and trails, sometimes at short notice.

Visitors are reminded that the end of a Total Fire Ban does not automatically mean closed areas have reopened.

People visiting rivers and waterways should avoid swimming alone, supervise children and wear lifejackets where appropriate.

Current closures and access information are available through Parks ACT alerts, while fire bans and emergency warnings are published on the ACT Emergency Services Agency website. In a life-threatening emergency, call 000.
