Shadow cabinet reshuffle after Castley exit

Mark Parton and Leanne Castley.

The Canberra Liberals have redistributed Leanne Castley’s former shadow portfolios after the former opposition leader quit the party on Wednesday and moved to the crossbench as an independent.

Opposition Leader Mark Parton has announced a limited reshuffle of responsibilities, with Deputy Leader of the Opposition Deborah Morris to take on Women and Women’s Health.

Peter Cain will add City Services to his existing responsibilities for Government Services, Community Services and Disability, Veterans, and Seniors.

Chiaka Barry will take on responsibility for the Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence.

The changes follow Castley’s sudden resignation from the Canberra Liberals. She is a member for Yerrabi and a former leader of the party and said she would serve the rest of the term as an independent MLA on the crossbench.

She alleged that she had experienced bullying, intimidation, lies and a threat of physical assault over the past 18 months. Mr Parton has said he does not condone bullying, intimidation or inappropriate behaviour, while senior Liberal figures have rejected claims of a toxic culture.

The reshuffle is the latest disruption for the Canberra Liberals, who have been seeking to present a united alternative government under Mr Parton after a period of internal instability. Mr Parton became leader in November, with Ms Morris elected deputy, after Ms Castley and former deputy Jeremy Hanson stepped down from the leadership.
