WorkSafe ACT has issued 28 notices to construction businesses following a weekend safety blitz at residential and commercial building sites in Denman Prospect and Whitlam.
Inspectors issued seven prohibition notices, 16 improvement notices and five infringement notices after identifying workplace safety concerns.
The problems included inadequate protection against falls, poor site security, unsafe housekeeping and hygiene, and unauthorised access to scaffolding.
Acting Work Health and Safety Commissioner Peggy Cheong says the number of notices issued per inspection during the weekend operation was significantly higher than during weekday inspections.
“It is disappointing to again see that the number of notices issued per visit ratio from the weekend operation is significantly higher than workplace visits carried out during weekdays,” she says.
Cheong warns that employers must maintain workplace safety standards regardless of when work is being undertaken.
WorkSafe ACT says targeted inspections and enforcement activities will continue.
