Canberra motorists face a series of road closures and detours this month as work continues on light rail, the Monaro Highway and the Molonglo River Bridge.

The disruptions coincide with Floriade and the closure of the northbound span of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge for renewal works.

For Light Rail Stage 2A, the Edinburgh Avenue intersection between London Circuit and Knowles Place, as well as London Circuit between Edinburgh Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue, will close from 8pm on September 18 until 5am on September 21.

Gordon Street between Marcus Clarke Street and London Circuit will then close from 8pm on September 24 until 5am on September 28 for track works.

On the Monaro Highway, Lanyon Drive will close between the northbound and southbound carriageways from 7pm on September 18 until 5am on September 21 for asphalting. Traffic will be detoured through Hume via Sheppard Street.

Coppins Crossing Road between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue will close in both directions from 2am on September 28 until 6pm on October 2 for earthworks, drainage and utility works associated with the Molonglo River Bridge project.

The closure could be extended until October 4 depending on conditions, and is expected to be the project’s last significant full road closure.

Floriade visitors will also face changed pedestrian, cycling and parking arrangements, with additional shuttle buses operating during the event.

About 10,000 car parking spaces are available across Civic, with free parking from 5.30pm Wednesday to Sunday evenings at nearby public car parks.

Motorists are being urged to allow extra travel time and check current conditions before travelling.
