Prescribed burns will be carried out at Coombs and Mitchell over the next two days, subject to suitable weather and fuel conditions.

An ecological burn at Coombs Peninsula is scheduled to begin today to restore grassland, while a cultural burn at Nadjung Mada Nature Reserve near Mitchell is planned for Saturday in partnership with Ngunnawal community representatives using traditional burning techniques to restore native vegetation.

Parks and Conservation Service fire managers will oversee both operations, with crews remaining on site until the burns are complete.

Smoke, flames and glowing embers may be visible in the areas, and residents are asked not to call triple-zero unless they see an unattended fire. The burns form part of the ACT’s annual Bushfire Operations Plan to improve ecological health and reduce bushfire risk.
