ACT Opposition Leader Mark Parton is calling on the ACT Government to publicly release the full costings and timeline for Light Rail Stage 2B to Woden, arguing Canberrans deserve greater transparency over major infrastructure spending.

Mr Parton has lodged a motion in the Legislative Assembly seeking the release of early project costings by the last sitting week in June.

The move follows a report by economist Saul Eslake into the ACT’s fiscal sustainability, which described the territory’s financial position as “unsustainable” and raised concerns about transparency around infrastructure projects.

Mr Parton said the Government should disclose projected spending on early works, bridge duplication, roadworks, tram stops, pedestrian infrastructure and additional rolling stock before committing to the next stage of the project.

“Canberrans deserve to know exactly how much this project will cost before the Government signs them up to billions more in debt,” he said.

He said detailed figures for Stage 2B had not yet been made public despite the significant cost of earlier stages of the light rail project.
