The Canberra Liberals have introduced legislation to strengthen suicide prevention in the ACT by requiring government agencies to coordinate their efforts and publicly report on progress.
The Suicide Prevention Bill 2026, introduced by Liberal leader Mark Parton, would require a territory-wide suicide prevention plan, supported by individual plans across government directorates and agencies, including police.
It would also establish a Suicide Prevention Council to advise government, improve collaboration and ensure people affected by suicide have a say in policy development.
The bill proposes a framework for collecting information on suspected and confirmed deaths by suicide, with safeguards to protect sensitive information.
Parton says the legislation would make suicide prevention an ongoing government responsibility, rather than a series of separate initiatives.
“We need a coordinated approach, clear responsibilities and genuine accountability,” he says.
Suicide Prevention Australia CEO Nieves Murray has welcomed the bill and urged bipartisan support, pointing to similar legislative frameworks in NSW and South Australia.
Parton says the proposed laws would address suicide risks across the community, including the particular challenges affecting men and boys.
The bill will be debated at a later date.
