Motorcyclist charged after police struggle

A 20-year-old Nicholls man has been charged with multiple driving offences after police allege he failed to stop for officers and resisted arrest at a busy Gungahlin intersection.

Police said they were patrolling Gungahlin Drive about 2.20pm on Friday when they saw a black motorcycle without a number plate travelling at excessive speed towards Gungahlin Town Centre.

A short time later, a police motorcyclist found the motorcycle stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Gundaroo Drive and Mirrabei Drive.

Police allege the officer pulled alongside the motorcycle, switched off its engine and directed the rider to stop.

The rider allegedly tried to push the motorcycle away and restart it. Police said the officer got off the motorcycle and attempted to arrest the rider, leading to a prolonged struggle that moved into the middle of the intersection in view of motorists and pedestrians.

The 20-year-old man was arrested and returned negative roadside alcohol and drug tests.

Police allege the man was unlicensed. He has been charged with failing to stop for police, resisting a Territory public official, using an unregistered vehicle, contravening an alcohol interlock condition, and using a number plate not attached as required.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the intersection of Gundaroo Drive and Mirrabei Drive about 2.20pm on Friday should contact police via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
