Canberra-raised Leonard (“Lenny”) Weiss will conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra next week, becoming the first Australian ever to lead the ensemble at its home, Symphony Hall.

Weiss will take the podium as part of a subscription program shared with the orchestra’s music director Andris Nelsons, following his recent participation in the orchestra’s renowned Tanglewood Music Center conducting fellowship.

“It’s tremendously exciting and a bit incredible given their 120-plus year history,” Weiss said, noting that while Australians have previously conducted the orchestra on tour and at Tanglewood, none had appeared in Symphony Hall itself.

The program will feature Vyšehrad, the opening movement from Má Vlast by Bedřich Smetana. Fellow conductor Yiran Zhao will lead the suite’s more widely known second movement, The Moldau (Vltava).

The concerts also mark one of the final programs overseen by longtime Boston Symphony executive Tony Fogg, an Australian who is retiring after more than three decades with the orchestra. Fogg previously served as artistic director of the ABC’s orchestras, adding a notable Australian connection to the event.

Weiss described his time at Tanglewood as the most incredible two months, and said the opportunity to return and conduct the full orchestra represents a significant milestone in his career. As part of the fellowship, he has also been working closely with Nelsons and will later collaborate with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester in Germany.

Based in Berlin, Weiss is undertaking a five-month residency at Deutsche Oper Berlin after receiving the Opera Foundation for Young Australians’ Berlin Music Opera Award.

During his tenure, he has been conducting rehearsals for Giulio Cesare and preparing for the world premiere of his production Endlich, which will debut in Berlin and at the Munich Biennale in May.

Weiss is due to arrive in Boston this week ahead of the performances, which he describes as a unique life experience.
