Independent MLA Fiona Carrick is calling for a coordinated plan for Southlands in Mawson, saying three overlapping government planning processes are leaving residents confused about the centre’s future.

The Murrumbidgee MLA said the government was simultaneously consulting on the Southern Gateway Planning and Design Framework, a Suburban Land Agency proposal for a second supermarket and associated redevelopment, and public space upgrades around Mawson Place.

Ms Carrick said residents did not have enough information about how the proposals fitted together or the combined impact of additional housing, commercial development, public spaces and community facilities.

“The community deserves to be given a clear picture of the scale of the combined impact,” she said.

Ms Carrick also questioned plans being considered to relocate the Southlands Tennis Club, saying residents had not been given a clear explanation for the move.

She said the club’s courts were used year-round, it had one of Canberra’s highest court booking rates, record membership and 10 years remaining on its lease.

Ms Carrick called on the government to explain why relocation was being considered, what alternatives had been examined and how the proposal fitted into its broader plans for Southlands.

She said the community needed a coordinated plan showing how proposed housing, commercial development, recreation facilities and public spaces would work together.
