The Canberra Liberals are calling on the ACT Government to urgently repair broken heaters in public housing after reports some elderly tenants have been left without heating for more than a month.

Shadow housing minister Chiaka Barry said her office had been contacted by relatives of elderly residents who claimed they had been told repairs could take another three to five weeks.

The Liberals said one resident had been relying on a small fan heater after her home’s heating system failed, while another family member claimed a faulty replacement unit had left an elderly pensioner without adequate heating.

Ms Barry said the delays followed concerns raised in the ACT Ombudsman’s March 2026 report Falling through the Gaps, which identified shortcomings in the management of public housing repairs. She called on the government to ensure vulnerable tenants were not left without heating during winter.
