Canberra Liberals education spokeswoman Elizabeth Lee is demanding answers over proposed budget cuts to some ACT public schools and colleges in 2027, warning they could affect staffing, programs and maintenance.

Ms Lee said she had been told affected schools were “blindsided” by the funding reductions and had not been consulted about the changes.

The cuts come after the independent ACT Public School System Resourcing Review identified pressures facing the public education system.

“Every funding decision has real consequences for students, teachers, support staff and families. Schools are already dealing with increasing student needs and workforce pressures,” Ms Lee said.

She called on Education Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith to detail which schools would be affected, the extent of the reductions and what they would mean for students and staff.

“Will schools be forced to delay maintenance, reduce programs, or cut teaching staff and support? These are the questions staff, parents and school communities deserve answers to,” Ms Lee said.
