Police swoop on long-weekend drivers

Police issued dozens of fines and caught drink and drug drivers across Canberra and Jervis Bay over the Anzac Day long weekend.

In Canberra, 74 infringement notices and 34 cautions were issued between Friday and Monday.

In Jervis Bay, officers conducted random testing of almost 1000 drivers, with two returning positive alcohol tests and four testing positive to drugs. A further 27 drivers were fined for speeding and 10 vehicles were defected.

Police also detected a motorcyclist travelling at 134km/h in a 60km/h zone on Jervis Bay Road on Sunday. The 26-year-old NSW rider was fined $1841, incurred 12 demerit points and had his ACT driving privileges suspended for six months.

In a separate incident, a 47-year-old man was stopped on Parkes Way late Monday night and allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.161, more than three times the legal limit. His ACT driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and is expected to face court.
