Canberrans are invited to mark Reconciliation Day on Monday, with the ACT Government hosting a free community event at John Dunmore Lang Place, the grassed area between Questacon and the National Portrait Gallery.
The annual public holiday, held on June 1, coincides with National Reconciliation Week and will feature cultural performances, workshops, storytelling sessions and guided experiences celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
The ACT Government said this year’s event adopts the National Reconciliation Week theme All In, encouraging Australians to contribute to reconciliation and a more inclusive future.
Headline performer Casey Donovan will lead a program that also includes performances by Wiradjuri Echoes, Dream Danz Studios, Tahalianna Soward-Mahanga and Liam Keenan.
Visitors will be able to take part in language workshops, traditional weaving and beading sessions, cultural storytelling activities and guided tours exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.
The free event will run from 10am to 3pm.
Public transport will also be free for attendees between 9am and 4pm. Passengers can access free travel by telling drivers or customer service officers they are attending Reconciliation Day, without needing to tap on or off with a MyWay+ card.
Reconciliation Australia chief executive Karen Mundine said the ACT remained the only jurisdiction in Australia with a public holiday dedicated to reconciliation.
The full program and transport details are at the ACT Government’s Reconciliation Day website.
