The ACT Greens will push for faster expansion of Canberra’s public transport network, including extending light rail to Mawson and funding a dedicated bus corridor to Belconnen.
Greens transport spokesperson Andrew Braddock and party leader Jo Clay will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly this week calling on the ACT Government to lodge a Works Approval Application for Light Rail Stage 2B with the National Capital Authority by the end of 2027.
The proposal also calls for the extension to continue to Mawson, funding for the Belconnen Bus Transitway, planning work for future light rail from Kippax to the airport, and expansion of Canberra’s electric bus fleet.
Mr Braddock said Canberra’s public transport network had failed to keep pace with population growth and called for public transport infrastructure to be planned alongside new suburbs. “It is staggering that Canberra’s bus fleet is smaller today than it was in 1990, despite our population growing by more than 60 per cent.”
Ms Clay said the Government should commit to building a dedicated bus lane to Belconnen, describing it as Canberra’s busiest public transport corridor.
