Canberrans are being invited to suggest changes to the ACT’s electoral boundaries and electorate names ahead of the 2028 Legislative Assembly election.
The public consultation period opened today as part of a redistribution required under the Electoral Act to account for population and enrolment changes across the territory.
ACT Electoral Commissioner Damian Cantwell says residents and organisations have 28 days to make suggestions, with submissions closing on November 3.
Those suggestions will then be published for a further 14-day public comment period before the Redistribution Committee proposes boundaries and names for the ACT’s five electorates.
The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, with five elected from each of Brindabella, Ginninderra, Kurrajong, Murrumbidgee and Yerrabi.
Under the redistribution requirements, enrolment in each electorate is expected to be within five per cent of the quota at the time of the 2028 election.
The committee must also consider factors including communities of interest, transport and communication links, existing electoral boundaries and suburb boundaries.
A proposed redistribution will be published after the initial consultation, followed by a further 28-day objection period.
Information about the redistribution, enrolment statistics, mapping tools and how to make a suggestion is available on the ACT Electoral Commission website.
