Canberra children aged up to eight will be able to access developmental support without a formal diagnosis or referral when the Thriving Kids program launches tomorrow.

The first phase is backed by an initial $20.3 million ACT government spend over five years and forms part of a $63.4 million joint ACT and Commonwealth program.

From October 1, families concerned about their child’s development can call a new information and navigation service on 0262 055500 for advice and connections to support.

Services will progressively include expanded allied health therapy and assessments, developmental screening through Child and Family Centres, additional playgroups and parenting support, and targeted services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse families.

The program will be progressively rolled out ahead of full implementation on January 1, 2028.

The government says there will be no changes to NDIS access arrangements for children before then, while children already enrolled in the NDIS will continue receiving support under existing arrangements.
