New winter festival enters uncharted territory

A moment from “First Kiss A Robotic Pas de deux”

THE program for the ACT government’s vaguely-named new winter festival, “Uncharted Territory”, has been announced by Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

With more than 50 events planned, the 10-day event is aimed at getting Canberrans to think about innovation and creativity in new ways, as well as helping to increase visitation to Canberra at a traditionally quieter time of year.

Curiously, no mention is made of the event’s director Yolande Norris, suggesting that the leadership is also uncharted.

The Australian National University will play host to a range of events, including guided workshops by the ANU Makerspace on the basics of accessible technologies and the event will  feature a wide range of discussions, workshops and hands-on activities.

Picking up on previously programmed events will be Ainslie Salon’s “Midpoint”, “Lucie In the Sky” at The Playhouse, involving six dancers and five drones and the Chamaeleon Collective’s “Stars in 3D”.

Innovative events, viewable here, unchartedterritory.com.au will include a robotic pas de deux where two arms with human faces perform a looped sequence; a series of digital public artworks on Google Maps; a “Design your Vehicle” art workshop; a conversation with industry leaders and scientists that explores the intersection of space innovation and sustainability on Earth; an experimental theatre work that traces how one word can change the course of our lives; a laser-cut jewellery workshop and a climate-oriented conversation on “How Beer, Art and Our Cultural Institutions Can Lead the Transition to a Regenerative Future”.

“Uncharted Territory”, around Canberra, July 7-16.
