Police swoop to keep Civic safe

Police have launched a high-visibility operation targeting anti-social behaviour and public intoxication in Canberra’s city centre.

The CBD SAFE operation will see additional patrols deployed during peak periods, with police also working with businesses and support services to address ongoing concerns in the area.

Police say enforcement action will be taken where offences occur, while some people may instead be referred to support services.

The operation follows a series of incidents in Civic, including the arrest of three men last Friday after a taxi driver reported being threatened during a fare.

Police say officers later found three men matching the description on Bunda Street. While speaking with them, a member of the public approached officers and alleged he had just been robbed and assaulted by the trio.

Property belonging to the victim was allegedly found in the men’s possession.

The three men, aged 19, 22 and 23, have been charged with aggravated robbery, assault and theft. The 19-year-old and 23-year-old also face additional charges relating to alleged breaches of bail and other court orders.
