Commonwealth Avenue closures for light rail

Northbound traffic on Commonwealth Avenue between the Parkes Way off-ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed from 8pm on June 11 until 5am on June 15, weather permitting, with detours in place.

Sections of Commonwealth Avenue will be closed and traffic reduced to single lanes in June to allow construction work on Light Rail Stage 2A.

Northbound traffic on Commonwealth Avenue between the Parkes Way off-ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed from 8pm on June 11 until 5am on June 15, weather permitting, with detours in place.

During the same period, southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane between Vernon Circle and Albert Street East, while northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane between Albert Street West and the Parkes Way on-ramp.

Albert Street West will also be closed from 8pm on June 12 until 5am on June 15.

The ACT Government says the closures are needed for stormwater works, streetlight installation, delivery of rail infrastructure and construction of the City South and Commonwealth Park light rail stops.

Intermittent lane closures and traffic changes will continue throughout June on Commonwealth Avenue and sections of Northbourne Avenue.

Major construction on Light Rail Stage 2A is expected to finish in early 2027, with testing and commissioning to follow ahead of services beginning in early 2028.
