Wife’s visa cancelled while she was overseas

A 35-year-old man has been charged by ACT police with human trafficking after allegedly convincing his wife to leave Australia before cancelling her visa while she was overseas.

Police allege the couple travelled to India in September 2024 ahead of the birth of their child, with the man telling his wife he would briefly return to Australia for work before coming back.

He allegedly failed to return and later fraudulently cancelled the woman’s visa application and blocked her contact number.

The woman returned to Australia in August last year, but the couple’s son remained in India.

Police allege the woman contacted authorities in March after believing her husband was planning to take her back to India and abandon her again.

The man was arrested on April 14 and has been charged with exit trafficking.
