Prescribed ecological burn underway in Kowen

A prescribed ecological burn is set to get underway in Kowen on Friday, as part of ongoing efforts to manage vegetation and reduce bushfire risk across the ACT.

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service said the burn, located off the Kings Highway, will proceed on May 1, subject to suitable weather and fuel moisture conditions.

The operation aims to reduce exotic grasses and weeds in the area, with experienced fire managers overseeing the burn.

Authorities say while every effort is made to limit smoke, residents may notice temporary smoke haze across parts of Canberra.

Fire crews will remain on site to monitor and patrol the burn through to completion. Officials say visible flames, smoke and glowing embers are expected during the operation and do not require emergency calls unless a fire appears unattended.

Prescribed burns form a key part of the ACT’s annual bushfire management strategy, designed to improve ecological conditions while lowering the risk of more dangerous fires.

Meanwhile, hazard reduction work is continuing at Googong Nature Reserve, where a prescribed burn is nearing completion. Crews are expected to remain in the area until at least Friday to patrol and secure the site.

More information about prescribed hazard reduction burns is available on the Parks ACT website.
