Teen girls charged over stolen car, bottle shop theft

Two teenage girls have been charged and police are searching for other suspects following a bottleshop theft and dangerous driving in a stolen car across Canberra’s north.

Police say that about 5pm on Tuesday, six people got out of a stolen white Volkswagen Polo outside a bottleshop in Dunlop before entering the store and allegedly stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of alcohol.

The group then fled in the vehicle, which was later seen by police and witnesses driving dangerously through Belconnen and Gungahlin.

At one point, the Polo crossed on to the wrong side of the Federal Highway and drove towards oncoming traffic. Police also allege bottles of alcohol were thrown at police vehicles during the incident.

The car was found in Franklin about 6.10pm, where three girls were located nearby, including one subject to bail conditions.

Two girls were charged with riding in a motor vehicle without consent and joint commission minor theft.

Investigations to identify the remaining occupants are continuing.

Anyone who witnessed the vehicle or has dash-cam footage to contact them via the Crime Stoppers website.
