Early morning police pursuit ends in drain

A 34-year-old Symonston man has been charged after a police pursuit through Canberra’s south in the early hours of Thursday. He was on bail for similar alleged offences.

At about 5.10am, police patrolling on Melrose Drive in Phillip spotted a dark blue Mazda CX-9 drive through a red light at the intersection with Eggleston Crescent.

Police activated their lights and sirens, however the driver failed to stop and accelerated away.

Police pursued the vehicle through Chifley and Waramanga, where it allegedly left the road and travelled along a green belt beside a cycle path.

The vehicle then entered Tuggeranong Parkway, where police allege the driver performed a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic before veering off the road on to a nature strip and becoming wedged in a stormwater drain, where the driver was arrested.

He has been charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and using number plates issued to another vehicle.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash-cam footage is asked to contact police via crimestoppersact.com.au  or calling 1800 333000.
