Joeys and Cubs from the Garran Scout Group have prepared and delivered more than 25 handmade gift baskets for mothers at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, including those with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The baskets, filled with chocolates and small treats donated by Scout families, were created as part of an Easter initiative aimed at supporting mums unable to celebrate at home.
Group leader Jeremy Stredwick said the project was about showing care and recognition to women facing challenging circumstances.
“Mothers play an extraordinary role in the lives of our families and communities, and occasions such as Mother’s Day and Easter are an important opportunity to acknowledge that with warmth and care,” he said.
“We especially wanted to recognise the mothers at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, including those in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, who may be spending this time under particularly difficult circumstances.”
He said that for the young Scouts involved, the effort was also a lesson in community service, with the Joeys and Cubs helping assemble each basket.
Through the initiative, the group hoped the small gesture would bring comfort to mothers spending days by their newborns’ bedsides — and remind them they were supported by the broader community.
