Independent MLA Thomas Emerson says the ACT Government is not taking the impact of the fuel crisis seriously enough, labelling a recent public transport fare announcement as inadequate and overly complex.
The member for Kurrajong was responding to the Chief Minister’s announcement of reduced monthly fare caps, arguing the changes were unlikely to shift commuter behaviour.
“While it’s positive to see the ACT Government taking some action, what’s been announced is unlikely to encourage Canberrans out of their cars on to public transport,” Emerson said.
“The fare cap changes are strangely complex and unlikely to land with people who don’t already use public transport.”
Emerson said the community was expecting a stronger response from government as fuel costs continue to rise.
“Our community is calling for a strong government response, not a weak non-announcement,” he said.
He said he wrote to the chief minister earlier this week, proposing a package of measures to be considered by the ACT Government’s Security and Emergency Management Cabinet.
His recommendations include free or discounted public transport to boost usage, expanded dedicated bus lanes, and temporary “pop-up” cycle lanes along major corridors such as Northbourne Avenue.
Emerson also called for e-bikes to be added to the ACT’s Sustainable Household Scheme and for targeted cost-of-living relief, including increased funding for food relief organisations and fuel vouchers for those most in need.
“I understand wanting to avoid knee-jerk reactions, but resting on our laurels isn’t fair to Canberrans either,” he said.
Emerson said the government needed to both reduce reliance on fuel and provide support to those unable to switch transport options.
“This crisis isn’t going away any time soon, and I’m urging the ACT Government to take meaningful action to support our community,” he said.
