Board ponders future of riesling challenge

The future of the Canberra International Riesling Challenge (CIRC), one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions dedicated exclusively to riesling, will be decided by its board on Friday.

Informed sources have told CityNews that the directors are concerned at uncertainty around the ACT Government’s essential sponsorship funding.

The government is listed as a major or principal sponsor alongside industry partners.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr has consistently endorsed and promoted the event as a major tourism and industry asset. In official messages, he has described it as one of the most important wine shows of its kind and highlights its global draw and benefits to Canberra.

Beyond the financial uncertainty, this year Albert Hall, where the event is judged and a public wine tasting is held each September, is unavailable. Refurbishment of the hall is running behind schedule leaving the CIRC without a venue.

Founded by celebrated Murrumbateman riesling maker Ken Helm in 2000, CIRC brings together hundreds of rieslings from major wine-producing countries including Australia, Germany, Austria, France, NZ and the US. The event is known for its strong international judging panel.

“It is sad that the International Riesling Challenge may fold,” said CityNews wine writer Richard Calver.

“It celebrates the most versatile of white wine varieties, it is a great way to promote riesling to the public. This is especially the case as Canberra District rieslings are world class, with local doyen of the industry Ken Helm being one of the founders and the provider of a perpetual trophy for the best provenance riesling.

“I have had the pleasure of attending a number of the Challenge’s award ceremonies and this truly international event, with entries from all major riesling production areas, is a real showcase for Canberra.”
