Man charged after violent carjacking

A 34-year-old man has been charged after an alleged carjacking in Goulburn on Monday morning left a 62-year-old driver with facial injuries.

Police allege the older man was sitting in the driver’s seat of an SUV about 7.30am when he was approached by an unknown man who opened the door, threatened him and assaulted him before driving away in the vehicle.

The 62-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Goulburn Hospital in a stable condition.

A short time later, officers attached to the Hume Police District received reports of a vehicle allegedly being driven erratically on the Hume Highway at Goulburn before the SUV was located in the car park of a hospital on Goldsmith Street.

The driver allegedly ran from the police but was detained nearby.

The 34-year-old was taken to Goulburn Police Station and charged with aggravated robbery, escaping police custody, driving while disqualified and possessing identification information to commit an indictable offence.
