Boy, 12, seriously hurt in e-bike crash

A 12-year-old boy has been seriously injured after an e-bike carrying three young riders collided with a utility in Melba.

Police say the crash happened about 9pm on Monday at the intersection of Verbrugghen Street and Chinner Crescent, involving a white Mitsubishi Triton and a black e-bike.

Three young people riding on the e-bike were treated at the scene by paramedics. The 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police are aware the boy and two others were seen riding around Belconnen earlier that evening and are seeking anyone who witnessed the riders or has dashcam footage from the area before the collision to come forward.

Insp Mark Steel warned of the safety risks associated with e-rideable devices.

“Just as when you’re driving a car or riding a motorcycle, the same road rules apply for e-rideable devices. Please be aware and stay alert,” he said.

“Without proper protective clothing, helmets, and safe riding behaviour, riders risk being involved in high-speed collisions and suffering severe injuries or death.”

Anyone who can assist is urged to contact police via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
