PROTESTERS waving flags and banners noisily marched through Civic on Saturday afternoon in support of the treatment of Palestinians caught in the conflict between the Hamas terror group and Israel. 

Described by one passer-by as “deafening”, the couple of hundred protesters were blowing whistles and chanting: “Long live Palestine” and “Free, free Palestine”.

The group rallied in Garema Place where they demanded an Israeli ceasefire and it was announced there would be a strike of Canberra school students at 1pm on December 7.

There were also banners calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to stand with the people of embattled Gaza.

The Canberra protest comes in the wake of protests in Sydney and Melbourne yesterday by thousands of school students.

In Sydney an estimated thousand students skipped class to show support for Palestinian children caught up in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Rallying at Sydney’s Town Hall, Year 12 student and rally organiser Eva said attendees had a moral duty to stand up for the children of Gaza and call for an end to Israel’s war on the Islamic militant group.

“We’re not going to stand for this,” she told the crowd to loud cheers as speakers called for an end to the bombing in Gaza and children as young as five watched on.

“High school students in Gaza right now can’t go to school, can’t get an education.

“As students, we have a moral duty to stand up for Palestine.”

In Adelaide, pupils also held a demonstration at Parliament House on Thursday.
