A 31-year-old man is facing 19 charges relating to alleged sexual assaults and other offences following his arrest on Saturday.
In early October the man’s former partner reported to police a series of alleged sexual assaults and other crimes committed against her during August and September. Police say the woman met the man at the beginning of August when she was homeless.
The woman alleged that the man:
- Repeatedly committed sexual assaults against her over a period of two months, including while she was unconscious.
- Threatened to kill her on multiple occasions.
- Repeatedly choked her.
- Forced her to consume illicit drugs.
- Took her money, clothing and other items.
- Used a mobile phone to film some of the alleged assaults.
Police say they made multiple attempts to locate the man during the past three weeks – culminating in his arrest at about 10.50pm on Saturday night after police were called to a home adjacent to his former partner’s residence, where he was hiding in the roof cavity.
He was subsequently charged with 19 offences including aggravated intentional threat to kill a person, five counts of aggravated intimate observation or capturing visual data, six counts of sexual intercourse without consent, three counts of chokes, suffocates, strangles another person, aggravated choke a person and render insensible, administer substance dangerous to a person, aggravated common assault and aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court where bail will be opposed.
