Five family violence arrests overnight

A 56-year-old man who assaulted his wife and damaged property is one of five Canberrans arrested on family violence charges overnight.

The five arrests meant the average daily rate of family violence arrests in the ACT doubled.

In the past 24 hours, a 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman have been arrested for failing to comply with their family violence orders, which prohibited them from contacting their partners.

Police allege the man called and texted his former partner more than 200 times in the one evening.

A second 30-year-old man has been charged with breaching his family violence order after he repeatedly drove past his ex-partner’s home, despite conditions stating he was prohibited from being in close proximity to her or her residence.

In another incident, a 38-year-old woman was charged with two counts of assault after she allegedly assaulted her parents.
