Arts, theatre, music, film and burlesque… it’s all happening in this week’s “Arts in the City”, by HELEN MUSA.

CANBERRA painter Margaret Hadfield has once again been shortlisted for the Gallipoli Art Prize, this time for her portrait titled “Reverence”, of Cpl Michael Munday from outback army unit Norforce, the first indigenous soldier to be involved with Anzac commemorations in Villers-Bretonneux. The $20,000 art prize was first awarded by the Gallipoli Memorial Club in 2006 – to Hadfield. 

SHAKESPEARE was never like this at school – Daramalan Theatre Company, under the tutelage of Joe Woodward, is about to stage “Troilus and Cressida”, a play considered by many people to be “not very nice”. It’s purportedly about the Trojan war, but it’s really a very up-to-date look at war and the programming of young people’s minds. Woodward promises: “This production approaches the work as if it has never been done before.” It’ll be staged cabaret style in McCowage Hall, Dickson, 7.30pm and 9pm, April 23. FORMER Luminescence Chamber Singer Jack Stephens is now director of music at St Paul’s College, University of Sydney. He’s bringing his choir to St Paul’s, Manuka, with a program of choral anthems, 3pm, April 15. 

CANBERRA Youth theatre director Luke Rogers is brimful of ideas, the latest of which is the company’s “12-hour theatre project”, to take place from 9am to 10pm on April 22. Over the course of the day, a team of young artists aged seven to 25 will devise, rehearse, produce and perform a new piece of theatre. “Seize the day,” Rogers says. FILM director Daniel Widdowson, whose terrific documentary “Trafficked to Australia”, about Australia’s involvement in human trafficking we featured last year, has written to say a TV station offered to buy the rights, but would only stream it for one month every year. JAZIDA Productions has the “Haus of Fabulous” dancers flapping their feathers and slinking their silks in an extravaganza at Bom Funk Theatre, Shop, High Street, Queanbeyan, 7pm for 8 pm, on April 15. Then they’re heading to Hollywood and Las Vegas.
