The findings of a three-year research collaboration will be presented tomorrow at the National Film and Sound Archive, with the launch of Living with Misinformation.

A new open-access book published by Routledge, it’s a practical guide designed to help communities respond to misinformation, which is becoming an increasingly familiar part of everyday life.

The project team has worked with national cultural institutions to investigate how Australians experience misinformation and how media literacy can help people make better-informed decisions about the digital content they consume.

Based on research involving more than 4400 adult Australians, the book argues that the challenge is to learn how to live with it by developing the skills, knowledge and critical awareness to evaluate online information.

The accompanying guide, co-produced with international organisation Tactical Tech, offers practical tools, activities and advice for schools, libraries, news organisations, governments, technology companies, researchers, community groups and ordinary people.

The launch will feature an introductory address by National Film and Sound Archive of Australia chief executive Patrick McIntyre, followed by a panel discussion hosted by facilitated by Australian Library and Information Association chief executive Cathie Warburton, with the authors, Professor Tanya Notley of Western Sydney University, Professor Michael Dezuanni and Dr Aimee Hourigan of Queensland University of Technology, Professor Sora Park of the University of Canberra and Associate Professor T.J. Thomson of RMIT University.

A media literacy showcase will also highlight work being undertaken by the project’s four industry partners, ABC Education, the Australian Library and Information Association, the Museum of Australian Democracy and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
