Passengers travelling between Canberra and Sydney could soon have access to free onboard Wi-Fi under a $1.5 million NSW TrainLink trial.

From late 2026, an Xplorer train capable of operating on the Canberra-Sydney route will be fitted with technology combining satellite internet with 4G and 5G mobile networks.

Transport for NSW will run the trial two long-distance trains over three months: the Xplorer, which also runs to Broken Hill, Griffith and Moree/Armidale, and an XPT service linking Sydney with Melbourne, Brisbane, Casino, Grafton and Dubbo.

The technology, which uses Low Earth Orbit satellites, will automatically switch between satellite and mobile networks to provide connectivity in areas where mobile coverage can be limited.

The trial will be delivered by Motion Applied Ltd through its Australian subsidiary MA Connected Intelligence.

Passenger usage and feedback will help determine whether the technology could be rolled out more widely across NSW TrainLink services.
