Police allege the man went to the home on Friday evening and became verbally aggressive towards a woman known to him.

Police allege that over an extended period he assaulted the woman, damaged property, restricted her movements and prevented her from contacting other people.

About 6.45pm on Saturday, a concerned friend contacted police after receiving messages from the woman asking for help.

Police went to the Higgins home for a welfare check and, after repeated attempts to contact those inside, used emergency powers to enter because of concerns for the woman’s safety.

Officers found the woman inside. The man was also found in the home and arrested.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday charged with forcible confinement, aggravated common assault, property damage, choking, suffocating or strangling another person, possessing an offensive weapon with intent and intentionally threatening to kill a person.
