The ACT Greens are pushing for 10 per cent of homes at the proposed Thoroughbred Park redevelopment to be public housing, as well as guarantees for parks, community facilities and future school capacity.

Greens Leader Jo Clay will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly today calling for the requirements to be incorporated into planning for the precinct, which is expected to accommodate 6200 homes and up to 16,400 people.

Under the proposal, developers would be required to provide 10 per cent of the homes as rent-fixed public housing, spread throughout the development, as well as additional community housing.

“There are over 3600 Canberrans stuck on the public housing waitlist right now,” Ms Clay said.

“Thoroughbred Park is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for government to lock in the public homes into a major infill development from day one.”

The motion also calls for developers to provide playgrounds, parks and community infrastructure and for land to be set aside to accommodate future primary and high school needs.

The Greens say several nearby schools are already approaching capacity, including Lyneham High and O’Connor Co-op at 93 per cent, Dickson College and Lyneham Primary at 90 per cent, and Majura Primary at 84 per cent.

The motion is expected to be tabled after 2pm on Tuesday.
