Driver crashes into police car after pursuit

A 23-year-old man has been charged after allegedly fleeing police, running a red light and crashing into an unmarked police vehicle in Lyneham on Tuesday.

Police allege the white Kia Cerato had previously failed to stop after being detected speeding with another vehicle on Athllon Drive in Phillip on Sunday.

Officers spotted the Kia on Northbourne Avenue about 1.40pm on Tuesday, but the driver allegedly accelerated away when directed to stop and continued onto the Federal Highway.

The Kia then collided with an unmarked police vehicle and a street sign near the intersection of the Federal Highway and Flemington Road.

The driver allegedly climbed a barbed-wire fence and fled on foot before being arrested following a short pursuit.

The 23-year-old Richardson man, who was on parole, has been charged with aggravated furious driving, failing to stop for police and unlicensed driving.

A 20-year-old passenger, who was subject to good behaviour obligations, was also charged after allegedly being found with knuckle dusters.
