Hindmarsh Drive in Phillip has been named Canberra’s worst crash hotspot, with nose-to-tail collisions the most common type of accident, according to the 2026 AAMI Crash Index.

The index, based on more than 394,000 motor insurance claims lodged across Australia during 2025, found busy arterial roads, major intersections and stop-start traffic were the most common locations for crashes.

Nationally, Springvale Road in Glen Waverley, Melbourne, topped the list of Australia’s worst crash hotspots, ending Plenty Road in Bundoora’s eight-year run at No. 1. Melbourne accounted for nine of the country’s top 10 crash locations.

Across Australia, nose-to-tail collisions remained the most common type of crash, ahead of failure to give way and collisions with stationary objects. Friday mornings were identified as the peak time for crashes.
