The ACT Government has released a draft planning framework for Canberra’s Southern Gateway corridor, inviting public feedback on a long-term vision for housing, transport and community infrastructure from Parliament House to Torrens and Farrer.

The draft Southern Gateway Planning and Design Framework proposes more housing close to future Light Rail Stage 2B stops and the existing rapid bus corridor, with mid-rise development around transport hubs and shopping centres, high-rise housing in Woden town centre and higher-density housing in north Curtin.

The government says the framework is intended to guide growth to 2050 and beyond, with community feedback helping shape future Territory Plan changes, precinct designs and infrastructure planning. Consultation is open until September 15.

The Property Council welcomed the draft framework, saying it was an important step towards delivering more homes in well-connected locations and supporting long-term housing supply. However, it said consultation should examine whether the proposed density around rapid transport stops would deliver enough homes to meet future demand.

The council also said planning for additional housing should be matched with community infrastructure, employment opportunities and a clear pathway to delivery, while recognising the ongoing importance of the Phillip service trades precinct.
